TSV 1860 Lions Roar to Victory in Dress Rehearsal: Giannikis’ Debut Shows Promising Results

Munich/Bregenz – Well, if this dress rehearsal of the Lions at Schwarz-Weiss Bregenz isn’t a backwards role, then we don’t know what is. The 6-3 fireworks display by TSV 1860 on Saturday against the Austrian second division club turned five unwritten Giesinger laws of the current season on their head. The new lion tamer Argirios Giannikis seems to be turning Sixty around right from the start, or was it just a coincidence? The AZ check is a completely different beast.

TSV 1860 suddenly accurate: “Extract a lot of positive things”

Giesinger Schützenfest: A whopping five competitive games without scoring your own goal? This time, six different goal scorers were able to enter the white-blue list: Marlon Frey (22nd), Fynn Lakenmacher (34th) and Valmir Sulejmani (55th) each equalized Bregenz’s lead, Eroll Zejnullahu (74th), Devin Sür (81st) and Mansour Ouro-Tagba (90th) finally achieved the clear victory in the test match. “Of course there were things that could be improved, but there were also a lot of good things. We made up three deficits, were in the final third a lot, created a lot of half-chances, but also scored six goals,” said Giannikis after his successful but laborious effort Premiere: “In this respect, we can draw a lot of positive things from both sections, but also a lot of things that need to be improved.”

Sixty can be behind: It was one of the biggest crosses made by former coach Maurizio Jacobacci: the sixty-two team regularly gave up their lead. On the other hand, you couldn’t win a single game after falling behind. And now? TSV managed to equalize three times after their opponents had taken the lead before finally scoring the victory.

Weak Lions players are showing an upward trend in form

Lakenmacher takes photos again: Fynn Lakenmacher has another mission. Sixty’s top scorer from last season (eight goals) only has one goal to his name this season. In Sixty’s winter preparation he recently hit the mark in EVERY test. Well, it was “only” two games. After all: two goals in a row that boost self-confidence. Can Giannikis shape him into an accurate goalscorer in the league or speak strongly? By the way: The German-Greek still stuck to Sixty’s plan to sign another attacker: “We’ll do something, but we want to make an improvement and not sign just any striker.”

Comeback of the discarded: With Tarsis Bonga, a lion misunderstanding has said goodbye to third division competitor Halle. Sixer Marlon Frey and attacker Valmir Sulejmani were also in danger of receiving a blue “bad purchase” stamp. In Bregenz, however, the duo smelled the dawn: Frey scored a dream goal to equalize 1-1, Sulejmani also skilfully scored and also provided two assists. Will the duo really reach sixty in the rest of the second half of the season?

Wrong balance at TSV 1860: Suddenly the defense wobbles

Shaky defense: It has been something of a showpiece so far, even though it was 15th in the table. Really not much has gone smoothly in the season so far: 1860 could mostly rely on its defense (23 goals conceded in 19 third division games), which represents the fifth best value in the third division comparison.

On the Neu Amerika artificial turf pitch, however, Sixty’s defense appeared to be quite shaky. 1860 “allowed easy goals,” criticized Giannikis. When he introduced himself, he said the beautiful and apt sentence that we have to work diligently to implement: “We have to manage to improve the offensive idea as a whole and create a balance so that a stable structure is created on the pitch.” Bregenz’s forward movement was okay, but looking at the result, it was obviously at the expense of the defense.

It is also clear: a test in which 1860 swirled vigorously at the break is only of limited use as a yardstick. All of this now needs to be shown in an emergency in the league – ideally at the start of the rest of the second half of the season against MSV Duisburg (Saturday, 4.30 p.m.). Everything except the shaky defense, mind you.
