Up and Coming German Tennis Hopefuls Make Waves in 2024

With Ella Seidel, an 18-year-old German tennis hopeful made it into the main field of the Australian Open on Friday, but two DTB hopefuls are also currently celebrating success away from the big tennis stage: Tessa Brockmann and Carolina Kuhl.

The tennis year 2024 and Tessa Brockmann could become good friends! After the young German won her first victories on the tour at the W15 event in Monastir, Tunisia last week, collected her first points for the world rankings and only lost in the final, the DTB hopeful is back in the same position this week the round of the last four.

Because of her performance the previous week, Brockmannn didn’t have to choose the qualification route this time, but was directly in the main field. Here she celebrated a narrow victory against the number three seeded Chinese Jiaqi Wang (5:7, 7:5 and 7:6), who is at position 572 in the WTA rankings and is therefore far ahead of Brockmann, who (still ) does not appear in the top 1000.

In the round of 16, Brockmann clearly defeated Frenchwoman Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard 6:4 and 6:0, before booking her ticket to the semi-finals with a 7:6 and 6:2 win against Chinese Chengyiyi Wang on Friday. The Russian Milana Zhabrailova, who defeated the top seeded Frenchwoman Yasmine Mansouri 6:3, 6:3, is now waiting there.

Incidentally, including qualification, Brockmann currently has nine wins and one defeat in 2024.

Carolina Kuhl, who is number 457 in the world rankings and is already a little ahead of Brockmann, has not lost at all in 2024, although she has only played three matches. The 18-year-old won the third on Friday in the quarter-finals of the W15 tournament in Esch an der Alzette (Luxembourg) with 6:3 and 6:4 against Amelia Waligora from Belgium (number 883 in the world rankings).

Previously, Kuhl, who is in third place in Luxembourg, eliminated two French women. In the semifinals she now has to face a Belgian again: Tilwith Di Girolami (number 825 in the world rankings), who defeated, among others, the number one ranked German Katahrina Hobgarski (number 362 in the world rankings) on the way to the semi-finals.
