Valentino Basket Castellaneta Continues to Soar in the Serie C Championship

Valentino Basket Castellaneta proves once again that it has no fear of heights and continues to fly in an amazing Serie C championship: in the match valid for the 2nd return day the red and whites beat Pallacanestro Molfetta 60-52 and find the seventh victory in eight matches, taking the play-off zone and second place in the standings (joined with Matera, Moletta and Monteroni).

Another battle that took place at the “Dimastrochicco” tensile structure, which may have made fans of the show turn up their noses, but which saw two teams fighting for every possession for 40 minutes, in a real chess game between the two coaches. A match that coach Console won.

Factor of the match was Datuowei, who once again wallows with his speed against the static nature of his long opponents, with 16 points. Huge performance from Vranjkovic, an insurmountable wall in the defensive phase, who recorded 12 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Once again “surgical” performances from captain Caló and Drava, always ready to find important points from long range in the most delicate moments. Carpignano also deserves a mention, taking to the court despite the physical problems he suffered during the week.

The script of the match is quite clear right from the start: little is scored and every action will have to be well constructed to overcome the walls erected by the two defences. Molfetta starts better and goes up 0-6 in the 3rd minute with Iannelli. VBC tries to shake things up with Datuowei’s triple and only in the middle of the period manages to regain parity again with a triple from the red and white 10, then finding the overtaking in the next possession with Vranjkovic: 13-11 at 5′ and from here until the the end of the first period is no longer marked.

The second period opens in the sign of Drava and Caló: two triples from the Latvian and one from the captain bring Castellaneta to +7 (22-15) after 4 minutes. Molfetta is hit, but certainly not sunk, and after several questionable whistles from the referee duo, with free throws they manage to get back to -2 (22-20) with Didonna and Infante. With 2′ to go, Vranjkovic’s 1/2 from free throws closes the first half of the match at 23-20.

Even in the third quarter VBC started better and returned to +7 (27-20) with Guduric and Bangu. Stella and Infante bring Molfetta closer once again, but a commendable Carpignano scores an important triple and then Vranjkovic once again brings VBC back to +7 (32-25). The guests still have the strength to come back with Duval and Infante, then Iannelli scores at 32-32. As in the second period, Vranjkovic takes care of it from the line to allow Castellaneta to close ahead: 34-32 the score at the end of the third period.

Fatigue begins to set in and the very tight ranks in defense break up: VBC takes advantage of this and tries to escape again with Drava from 3, Datuowei and Mbenza (41-32). The guests’ last gasps came from the hands of Stella and Didonna, but VBC did not fall apart and with Datuowei’s triple and Vranjkovic’s 2+1 they found a double-digit lead (49-39). In the final the red and whites, pushed by the bedlam of the Tensostatic, found the maximum advantage of +12 (57-45) with Caló. The last to give up for Molfetta are Duval and Didonna, with the latter ending the match at 60-52.

A fantastic evening for Valentino Basket Castellaneta ends in triumph: thanks go to the Castellaneta public who crowded the steps of a tensostatic stadium from 5pm where you could breathe the air of times gone by. Next Sunday, coach Console’s team awaits a difficult away match at Basket Francavilla, for a match that brings back memories of other times.
