The NBA was waiting for the first clash of the titans between Giannis Antetokounmpo and Victor Wembanyama. The latter had slipped away despite himself two weeks ago, the two physical monsters crossed swords last night on the Texan floor for a success for the Milwaukee Bucks over the San Antonio Spurs at the end of the suspense (121-125) . But “Wemby” delivered some brilliant actions which speak volumes of his incredible talent.
Author of 27 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks against Giannis himself, the Frenchman proved that he was already capable of evolving calmly to significant heights even if last night’s match remained a regular season meeting. A successful match therefore but also actions which will remain like this alley-oop for itself against the board, something extremely rare in the NBA, at the start of the 2nd quarter.
That wasn’t all since Wembanyama had decided to provide a very broad overview of his qualities. This is how he calmly concluded a counter-attack with a dribble behind the back, usually the prerogative of much smaller players, then a fierce dunk on Brook Lopez, one of the best blockers in the NBA (3 blocks in average per match).
And since Victor Wembanyama is already an excellent defender, the best blocker in the NBA in fact (3.2 on average), he could only end up with decisive actions on the other side of the field. His incredible wingspan first allowed him to block a three-point shot from Pat Connaughton before taking on Giannis Antetokounmpo who intended to dunk on his head in a very hot money-time.
This final burst of brilliance could well have helped the Spurs to come back to level with the Bucks in the final seconds but Tre Jones missed his attempt on a pass from Wembanyama. If he will obviously be disappointed with the collective result, he will be able to console himself by having seriously left his mark. “He is unique and has incredible talent. He can score whenever he wants!, commented Antetokounmpo. But you have never seen anything like this. I have never seen this. Maybe you have already seen this , but I don’t think so… Its potential is limitless!” A beautiful tribute from a player whose trajectory already inspires Victor Wembanyama.
