Explaining the reasons for his departure, Steinberg told the LETA agency that the state civil service relationship was terminated by mutual agreement, at the end of the probationary period –

over time, the cooperation has proven to be “not mutually satisfactory”.

He emphasized that he did not go to work at the ministry “because of the chair”, and positively evaluates the work done, including the recently approved procedure for distributing money to sports organizations, as well as the work started on the development of the new financing model for sports schools.

Also in a conversation with Latvijas Radio, Šteinbergs stated that he and the Ministry of Interior have different views on what needs to be done: “There is no need to look for some underwater stones. We do not have the same vision. In my opinion, we have started and laid the foundation stone for big works and have also done large works. I am personally satisfied with what I managed to do.”

He stated that since opinions differ, “one should part ways and give the next one a chance.”

Vladimirs Šteinbergs on the termination of the employment relationship with the Ministry of the Interior

The cooperation with Steinberg will be terminated by the Ministry of Interior on January 19. In order to ensure the continuity of the department’s work, Juris Zīvarts, director of the Supervision Department of the State Service for Quality of Education, will perform the duties of its director from January 20, the Ministry of Education and Culture informs. In the near future, a competition for the position of head of the Sports Department will also be announced.

Steinberg took the position of the head of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture in July 2023. After he took office, there were talks about possible reputational risks, but the MoE did not see them.

Steinberg was placed on probation, during which the Ministry of Education required “professional management.” Steinberg himself pledged to implement the tasks set in the Sports Policy Guidelines until 2027, “so that they provide both a short-term positive effect and become the basis for a stable development of the sports industry in the long term.”

The position of head of the Sports Department had been vacant since March 2023, when its long-time head Edgars Severs left the Department.

According to the information provided by the Ministry of Interior, four employees of the ministry have terminated their employment in the last two years, including two deputy state secretaries – department directors, one department director and one department head.
