Winter Fan Christian Streich Happy to Stay in Subzero Freiburg instead of Andalusian Sun

Subzero temperatures in Freiburg instead of Andalusian sun. Winter fan Christian Streich is happy that he decided against a winter training camp this season. Freiburg’s coach still has a small wish – and has to master a change.

Freiburg is one of the Bundesliga clubs that decided against a training camp abroad during this short winter break. Although the SC has felt comfortable in Sotogrande in January for many years, similar to its traditional summer residence in Schruns, Austria, and the bitter cold currently has almost all of Germany in its grip, Streich doesn’t miss the Andalusian sun near Gibraltar. On the contrary.

“I enjoy the German winter. It’s great that it’s cold for a few days and you can experience winter again. It sounds strange now, but it’s actually like that. Normally we don’t have winter anymore, but “These 12, 13, 14 degrees – that’s terrible in winter. I like having four seasons,” says Streich, who is always in a good mood even in the rain, as he revealed in the kicker interview in the summer of 2022, for example.

“Wonderful air” despite the icy cold

Because of the necessary two travel days with flights to and from Malaga and two longer bus transfers, the SC quickly decided against a winter camp this season due to the tight schedule. An additional reason for staying in Freiburg was the additional Europa League trips. “The boys were on the move a lot. We now have quite a few with small and very small children. The women are also happy when the boys are at home and can look after the children too,” says Streich.

The local training grounds are also in good condition. “Now it’s wonderful with wonderful air, we can train really well, we also had sun,” says winter fan Streich, for whom it could be even more wintry. “If there was 20 centimeters more snow on top, I wouldn’t mind. Maybe I’d go skiing or cross-country skiing under floodlights for an hour on Friday evening.”

Streich will soon have more time for such activities than during the tight schedule before Christmas. After the game on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against Union Berlin, there will be four full weeks of training before the play-off first leg in the Europa League at RC Lens.

“We’re not used to that anymore. Our rhythm in head and body is completely different. Normally there’s a game and then the next thing in our head. That’s not the case now. It’s also pleasant because you’re no longer so rushed at work and can also take a breather,” Streich describes the change. The 58-year-old is now also looking forward to “being able to intensify some of the training content again and do more eleven-on-eleven training.”
