Zaccharie Risacher: The Rising Star of French Basketball and Potential NBA Draft Pick

The first Frenchman to be selected as the first choice in the NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama could soon have a successor. Among the candidates? Alexandre Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher. The latter is particularly striking at the moment, and this does not go unnoticed by Wemby.

Interviewed by Andrew Lopez, insiderESPN based in San Antonio, Victor Wembanyama spoke about the influx of young talents coming straight from France: Alex Sarr, Tidjane Salaun, Melvin Ajinca, and of course Zaccharie Risacher.

Risacher, who has had a string of great performances with JL Bourg, is seeing his rating rise more and more in the eyes of scouts, to the point that some observers see him finishing as number 1 in the 2024 NBA Draft. Among them? There is Victor.

“He’s probably at the very top of his draft class. I don’t know anyone who is more talented than him in this draft class.

He knows how to do everything. He’s slender, he can block a lot of shots and offensively he does his thing. […] In Europe, there are very few players who come out of training centers to become pro, but he is one of them and what’s more he is dominating this year. He was an All-Star in France. So it’s going well for him.”

During his time at ASVEL (2021-22), Victor Wembanyama was briefly able to rub shoulders with Zaccharie Risacher (arrived at ASVEL in 2020), without developing a real relationship with him. But given Zacch’s rise, something tells us that their paths will soon cross again. Maybe with the Spurs who knows, but especially with the French team.

While Wemby is announced as the new face of French basketball, Risacher has just been selected for the first time with the Blues for the EuroBasket 2025 qualifying matches.

No doubt, French basketball has a bright future ahead of it.
