The dispute over the outcome of the Olympic figure skating team event at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing is entering the next round: Both the Canadian and Russian Olympic Committees have appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a new ranking of the competition by the International Ice Skating -Union (ISU) inserted. The results were changed due to a subsequently imposed four-year ban for Kamila Valiyeva for doping.
The Russian figure skating team had their points deducted after Valiyeva was banned, but they received the bronze medal instead of the gold, one point ahead of Canada. Gold subsequently went to the USA, silver to Japan.
It was only after the team competition that the now 17-year-old figure skater’s previous positive doping test became known. She had already tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine at the national championships in December 2021.
The CAS reported on Monday a total of four appeals regarding the recalculation of the ISU after the elimination of Waliyeva’s points. Canada, which had expected the entire Russian team to be disqualified, is appealing the ISU decision. The Russians want to get their gold back with their appeal.
