Judo, Wings, and Business: The Success Story of Paola Chumbay and Pedro Guanga

Paola Chumbay and Pedro Guanga managed to consolidate their business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Husbands and judokas Paola Chumbay and Pedro Guanga are motivated by the opportunity to compete in the United States. They both met 15 years ago at the dojo of the Azuay Sports Federation.

In search of a source that would allow them to finance their participation in various competitions, they created ‘Alasas’. It is a fast food business whose specialty is chicken wings dipped in honey mustard, barbecue or buffalo sauce.

The COVID-19 pandemic took them just two months after they decided to give the venture a boost. Adapting to the circumstances, they began to make home deliveries.

The seasoning began to be liked and the business began to take off. They currently have a location on Ricardo Durán Avenue, a few meters from the Borja School.

Passion for judo

Pedro started judo when he was 12 years old. He studied at Benigno Malo School. He had doubts whether or not he was fit for the sport. The family motivated him not to stop training.

His first medal was in an intercollegiate event. She took third place in 40 kg. “A switch turned on in my head and I said: I want more.”

In 2022 he made his dream of competing in the US Open, in Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida, come true. He took second place representing Team Prado.

In 2023 he was third at 81 kg during the South American Veterans Championship, in Guayaquil. “The results do not always occur in the way one seeks. You learn from defeat and experience is gained there.”

Pedro Guanga (I) won the silver medal at the US Open Judo Championships in 2022.

Goal 2024

This year the couple’s goal is in the United States. Pedro has his sights set on the World Veterans Championship to be held in Las Vegas in November. Paola wants to debut at the US Open Championships.

She trained judo since she was 10 years old. Due to an operation she retired from the sport. After 12 years she returned to the dojo. Professor Raúl Var helps her bring out the best version of herself in each training session.

To arrive in good condition for their respective competitions, both train two hours a day, starting at 07:00. They then dedicate their time to the business from 12:00 to 23:00.

Paola is in charge of the finances. Pedro is more involved in the kitchen. It is an area that he is passionate about. He confesses that due to various circumstances he stopped studying Gastronomy and ended up graduating in Systems Engineering.

Sports colleagues are the first to visit you in the business. He calls on people not to stop “supporting small businesses that struggle daily to get ahead.”

In May Pedro will turn 34 years old. He hopes to continue adding spice to life like when his clients request the ‘Carolina Reaper’, classified as the hottest pepper in the world in the Guinness Book of Records since August 7, 2013.
