Mainz 05’s Bo Henriksen Builds up Robin Zentner after Mistake in Leverkusen Defeat

FSV Mainz 05 sold well in Leverkusen, but came away empty-handed in the end – also because Robin Zentner made a mistake. Coach Bo Henriksen then spoke about his goalkeeper and his faux pas.

“Despite the defeat, you can highlight the performance,” said Mainz’s sports director Martin Schmidt after the zero-five team lost 2-1 in Leverkusen DAZN and emphasized that it was definitely their turn to “perhaps steal a point. But then we played into their hands with our own mistake and the red card.”

The 56-year-old was referring to Jessic Ngankam’s dismissal and goalkeeper Robin Zentner’s faux pas that made it 1-2. Coach Bo Henriksen also immediately defended the goalkeeper. Mistakes are “part of life,” explained the Dane and emphasized that Zentner “has done fantastically since I’ve been here, he’s a fantastic keeper. But now we have to build him up.”

Henriksen also revealed that he had already had a conversation with Zentner and immediately shared what he had told his goalkeeper. “I told him he’s a fantastic man and a fantastic goalkeeper. You have the spirit and you just have to show it. At the end of the day we know how good you are. Just go out there, be confident and brave – and me Promise you will save us before the season is over.”

Everyone is disappointed, that says it all.

The coach had already started mentally building up his keeper – and his players were also praised despite the defeat. With the exception of the last quarter of an hour before half-time, Henriksen said he saw his team play well. The Dane therefore emphasized that he was “very proud” of his players. “Everyone is disappointed, that says it all,” said the 49-year-old, pointing out that they played for a team that hasn’t lost in 33 games. “The fact that we are disappointed means we did something right. Everyone did their best.”

Henriksen has no doubts about the attitude of his players; he has already been able to see that for himself. “I’ve been here for ten days and you can see that the players are giving everything.” The Dane said that he could see the “spirit” of the team – and the “belief that we can achieve something together and that we will still be in the Bundesliga on May 28th.”
