Russia Mourns the Death of Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny

In Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and other Russian cities, people have tried to remember the opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who died in prison. Numerous people were arrested, some of them violently.

Footage from Friday shows officers snatching a banner from a protester in Moscow seconds after she unfurled it at the Solovetsky Stone. The woman was then taken away by the police.

Several people wanted to pay their last respects to Alexei Navalny at the monument dedicated to the victims of political repression.

Similar ad hoc commemorations took place across Russia after news of Navalny’s death broke.

Navalny, who fought against corruption in authorities as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest opponent and organized massive anti-Kremlin protests, died on Friday in the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence, Russian prison authorities said.

He was 47 years old.
