Austria’s tennis star Sebastian Ofner also suffered an opening defeat in Rio de Janeiro. The South American tour turns out to be a flop for him.
Sebastian Ofner is not getting going in his current six-tournament series. Austria’s currently best tennis player lost to Spaniard Jaume Munar 3:6,1:6 after just 67 minutes in the first round of the ATP 500 clay court tournament in Rio de Janeiro on Monday. The Styrian, seeded number eight in Brazil, recently suffered a defeat in his first tournament game in Cordoba and Buenos Aires (and previously at the Australian Open).
“The last three tournaments weren’t so good. It was very difficult for me to play. It was relatively gentle and it was probably a mistake that I didn’t stay on the hard court but instead played South America on clay,” admitted Ofner after the clear exit. “It’s just a lot slower to play, that wasn’t my thing at all.” It wasn’t good in terms of play either, but he learned something.
Ofner will continue in Mexico next week. In Acapulco the game will now be played on hard courts again, after which Wolfgang Thiem’s protégé has planned the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami. “I will make sure that I feel comfortable again straight away and that I can perform as well as I did before,” hopes Ofner.
