September 2, 2023, a huge convention center adjacent to the Westgate Las Vegas, famous as the hotel associated with Elvis Presley. At this venue, where over 8,000 Jiu-Jitsu practitioners had gathered, Yoshinari Fukushima, one of the members of the comedy duo “Galitchuu,” was about to begin a match.

“I lost a lot of work due to the coronavirus, so I went to see a quintet (group martial arts team competition) to see if there was anything I could do, and I thought I might be able to do jiu-jitsu or grappling.”

Fukushima entered the Triforce Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Ikebukuro on November 23, 2021. While he is active as a comedian, he practices diligently before competitions five or six times a week, which is more than a hobby.

“It’s an efficient way to detox your brain. (Mark) Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, who are said to be able to see into the future 20 years into the future, are also addicted to Jiu-Jitsu, and they say the same thing. I’m the one who said it first (lol). My husband and I have constant fights, I don’t have much work, and even though I hate everything during the coronavirus period, I can concentrate when we are physically together. My husband and I have no more fights and jobs. I don’t have to think about it. I feel refreshed after I’m done.”

Fukushima participated in the World Masters event, where Jiu-Jitsu practitioners over the age of 30 gather in Las Vegas from all over the world to determine the best in the world in each category. It’s not easy to win here. I am familiar with it because I have participated two years in a row.

Junichi Okada and Hiroshi Tamaki will also participate.

This time, former V6 member Junichi Okada and actor Hiroshi Tamaki were also participating, so there was more pressure. If they do well and I don’t win, “all the good things will be taken away from me.” This is the soul of an entertainer.

Fukushima won 4 times and won the Master 4 Blue Belt Lightweight category. The other two also won a single win, which resulted in a lot of media coverage.

I’m a photographer, but I’m also a jiu-jitsu practitioner. It has been 27 years since I started Jiu-Jitsu in New York. In the first place, I started because I wanted to take photos. I’ve watched “jiu-jitsu” in vain during that time, but its popularity has been increasing in recent years. There were only a handful of dojos, but the number continued to grow, and eventually I opened my own dojo in Takao, Hachioji City, Tokyo.

Yuki Nakai, president of the Japan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (JBJJF), explains the reason for its popularity.
