UIF presented 166 complaints during 2023 for crimes in the financial system – El Sol de México

In 2023, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) presented 166 complaints for alleged crimes in the Mexican financial system, which represented the year with the highest number of files opened since records began.

The 166 complaints filed were against 1,543 subjects, according to information revealed by the organization at the end of December of last year. At the same time, the authority included 656 people on its block list, the highest number since 2021.

To date, 6,958 individuals are on this list, a mechanism that prohibits them from having access to or relating to any financial institution in the Mexican system to commit a crime.

“The number of complaints may reflect that criminal activity increased, something that could also go hand in hand from a security point of view, but also that the FIU is using more resources to detect this type of operations,” commented Juvenal Lobato. In an interview, the specialist considered that although there is a considerable increase in the number of complaints by the agency, it does not mean that all of them end in a conviction, resources are recovered or, where appropriate, criminals are imprisoned. He explained that the complaints from the UIF are only the beginning of a process that also involves the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (PFF) and other instances.

“More than putting the magnifying glass on something, the FIU must fulfill its function fully, that all cases are analyzed and studied rigorously, so that this translates into complaints and resources recovered,” added the former president of the Tax Commission. of Coparmex.

El Sol de México consulted the FIU about the reason why the complaints were filed, but it responded that “the causes are diverse and it is information that we do not disclose.”

Fraudes fiscales

In the middle of last year, through the Fifth Government Report of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the institution pointed out that the complaints presented until then were of course fraud, tax fraud, organized crime, crimes against health and illicit exercise of public service. .

These crimes were identified in various vulnerable activities, which according to the institution are those tasks that, due to their nature and characteristics, may be a possibility for the entry of money resulting from a crime. The institution headed by Pablo Gómez highlighted that last year alone, more than eight million 379 thousand notices were generated for various vulnerable activities in the country.
