“It’s funny, Akira Toriyama was a big fan of Jackie Chan and you see that Jackie Chan’s characters are very good-natured, and he inspired him to create “Goku.” In fact, there is a photo out there of Jackie Chan shaking hands with Akira Toriyama and him as a fan, giving him a ‘Dragon Ball’ manga,” says De León by phone from Canada.

“His first mangas were very jokey, silly jokes with a very sexual humor, for example, he drew the very hot girls and the old green-tailed joker; ‘Dragon Ball’ has quite a bit of that at the beginning, sexual jokes, but kind of silly ones. Later it changed, for obvious reasons to cover more of the market,” says the work of the artist who died on March 1.

“Also, since ‘Goku’ is a practitioner of martial arts, Toriyama realized that he hit more with the fighting vibe, it was the 90s, with ‘GI Joe’, the children’s heroes were little soldiers, they liked fights and martial arts and went that way, the plot was that ‘Goku’ had to defeat the strongest enemy, the alien that came to conquer the world, or the demon king.

“When moving on to the video game, the art doesn’t really change, the drawing is very similar to what you see in the manga and the television series, the story, the proportions are respected, my favorite video game is ‘Dragon Ball Fighters’ that came out in 2018, it looks incredible, almost the entire studio that made the video game was a fan of ‘Dragon Ball’, it is done frame by frame, the artists of that game are geniuses, if I had a piece of animation for a game like that, It would be the pinnacle of my career, it would be my dream to have one of those scenes.”

His work crossed the West

As “Dragon Ball” is one of the most influential anime in several generations, since the 80s, David de León warns, it paved the way for other works that were also accepted on the American continent and in Europe, “it was the boom, in the United States.” “United hit the manga thanks to ‘Dragon Ball’.”

Toriyama died on March 1 at the age of 68, due to an acute subdural hematoma, the Bird studio in Tokyo reported in a statement, warning that the funerals will be private and no tribute has yet been confirmed. He mentions that for 45 years, he created “a unique world,” which he hopes will continue to be appreciated in the future.

All the art was done by Akira Toriyama.

“The bad thing is that ‘Dragon Ball’ stopped, Toriyama continued supervising the story and the manga that is already drawn by a guy called Toyotaro, but it is known that the script and supervision was done by Toriyama, obviously the fans will be worried because and now who is going to follow the story”, concludes David de León.
