First thought after Touchstone’s decision? No surprises. Analyzing the list of those appointed, it is difficult to see any great sensations among those appointed. There is no great controversy among those absent from the national team.
Because can the lack of a vocation for Arkadiusz Milik be considered as such? NO. After all, Touchstone didn’t call him up for the last training camp. The coach prefers other players, and Milik himself was not helped by his effectiveness. Or rather, the lack of it.
Although the Juventus forward scored a goal in the last league match against Atalanta, and in January he scored a hat-trick in the Coppa Italia, these were his only good moments in recent months. Milik had been waiting for a goal in Serie A since October 7, so such an irregular player could not be called up to the national team.
Especially since the position of Robert Lewandowski and Karol ¦widerski, who has shown very good performance in the national team in recent months, is unquestionable. It was also difficult not to call up Krzysztof Piątek, who has scored 13 goals in Turkey since the beginning of November.
There are no surprises among the goalkeepers either. If anyone expected that Probierz would suddenly give up £ukasz Skorupski at the expense of Kamil Grabara, he was wrong. The coach once again showed that he puts Bologna’s player and Marcin Bułka, who is sensational in France, above the skills of the Copenhagen goalkeeper.
Touchstone did not surprise with appointments
The appointment of Jagiellonia Białystok players: Taras Romanczuk and Dominik Marczuk was not a surprise. And it’s not just that the names of both players have appeared in the media in recent days. Romanczuk benefited from Patryk Dziczek’s injury. Jagiellonia’s captain is in good shape, and Probierz knows him well from his cooperation with the club and knows what to expect from him.
Marczuk is a top-class sensation. If any of our league players deserved to be called up the most, it was him. However, it is difficult to expect that he will get a serious chance in the play-off matches. It’s more of a reward for the progress he’s made in recent months.
Marczuk is the only debutant among those drafted by Probierz. For comparison, there were four of them at the first training camp: Dziczek, Patryk Peda, Bartłomiej Wdowik (replaced the injured Tymoteusz Puchacz) and Filip Marchwiński. Today, Probierz didn’t try anything and focused on experience.
And it’s hardly surprising, because the competition with Estonia and Wales or Finland is a match not only for the future of our national team, but probably also for the coach himself. If the play-offs are lost, the atmosphere around the team will become unbearably thick again and, knowing the history, the coach’s fate will be sealed. At least in the eyes of the fans.
That’s why the team again included, among others: experienced Jan Bednarek, Bartosz Bereszyński and Bartosz Salamon, who have had various adventures in recent months either in clubs or in the national team. And Probierz, instead of one of them, could have appointed, for example, Michał Helik, who regularly plays and scores goals in the Championship. However, he played for the national team only seven times, the last time in the fall of 2021.
Although not long ago we were demanding the rejuvenation of the national team, there is no place for it here and now. In the coming days, only two victories and promotion to Euro 2024 will count. Therefore, it is not surprising that Probierz did not surprise us with anything. Unless he makes it into the starting lineup for the match against Estonia.
