Secret hero in the Bundesliga: Referee Patrick Ittrich prevents a tragedy.

Mainz lost 8-1 to Bayern in the Bundesliga on Saturday. However, the severity of the defeat fades into the background due to the human drama that almost happened on the pitch.

As it has now become known, referee Patrick Ittrich (45) prevented a tragedy on the pitch. In the first half, Mainz professional Joshua Guilavogui (33) remained motionless after a collision and swallowed his tongue. Ittrich immediately rushes to help, puts the player in a stable side position and takes his tongue out of his throat.

In this way, Ittrich might save the Frenchman from suffocating. After the game, the full-time police officer explains his intervention: “If someone is lying there like that, then you have to act quickly. I have already experienced many such situations. The tongue was in the back and when it’s out again, you start breathing again and you’re there again.”

Guilavogui later reports on Instagram and finally gives the all-clear. «I would like to thank my teammates, the referee and the medical staff! I feel great and hope to be able to help my team again very soon.” (sbe)
