Carabinieri Intervene in Juvenile Crime Incident at Livorno Shopping Centre

As part of the intensification activities aimed at increasing control of the city territory to prevent and repress widespread crime, the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit of the Livorno Company last Sunday intervened in the Porta a Terra area at a shopping centre, following a report from the Operations Center which had received a request for help from some very young people for an alleged attack against them.

Once on site, the military identified four boys, two 15-year-olds, who reported having been attacked and hit, and two 16-year-olds, probably part of a larger group of seven. One of the latter two, from Livorno of Dominican origins, was holding an aluminum baseball bat 72 cm long, the possession of which in that circumstance he was unable to provide valid justification for and which was promptly seized by the military.

According to the reconstruction of the Carabinieri, carried out during investigations also through the examination of the parties, the acquisition of complaints from the victims as well as the analysis of the cellular users used by the attackers, the baseball bat found in the 16-year-old’s hand would have been the property of the peer, also from Livorno of Hungarian origin, who would have brought it from home, only to be used by the other to hit the two younger boys. It all apparently originated from a quarrel that arose for trivial reasons between groups of kids.

The victims, in addition to the fright, suffered only minor injuries, judged to be healable in 5 days due to “multi-contusive trauma” to the limbs.

However, regarding the other two 16-year-olds, the Carabinieri presented information to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Juvenile Court of Florence. In fact, the attacker was charged with the crime of personal injury, in addition to that of illegal possession of a weapon, while the owner of the baseball bat was charged with only the latter crime.

This activity falls within the broader spectrum of the Livorno Police Force’s combat strategy aimed at implementing its attention also towards events attributable to juvenile crime in the primary interest and protection of the community.
