Cipulis foursome in the world bobsled championship fourth after the first day of competition

In the first run, the four piloted by the German Francesco Friedrich achieved the best result, covering the track in 53.12 seconds and setting a new track record.

In second place, 0.17 seconds behind, was another German crew with pilot Johannes Lohner, but Cipulis with pushers Dāvi Springis, Matīs Mikni and Krista Lindenblatt lost to only two German crews, covering the track 0.46 seconds slower than Friedrich.

Kalenda and pushers Edgars Ungurs, Dāvis Kaufmanis and Mairis Kļava achieved the 11th fastest time in the competition of 22 quartets and lost 0.89 seconds to the leader.

The fourth place after the first run was taken by another German crew with pilot Adam Amur (+0.58), the fifth – the crew of Austrian Markus Treihl (+0.61) and the sixth – the crew piloted by the Italian Patrick Baumgartner (+0.69).

In the second race, Cipulis made several small mistakes, taking the eighth place in the race, but losing 0.80 seconds to the leader Fridrich in the sum of two races.

Kalenda had a fall at the bottom of the track, but a few turns later the bobsled fell back onto the skates, and the foursome finished with the worst result in 22 foursome races, but the two-run total ranks 20th, losing 2.71 seconds to the leaders.

The second German crew with pilot Lochner, who was also second in the second race, lost 0.27 seconds to the leaders, while Amurs, who achieved the third fastest time in the race, lost 0.75 seconds to the leader, ahead of Cipuli by five hundredths of a second.

The fifth is Treihl (+0.90) and the sixth – the four piloted by the British Brad Hall, which reached the fourth fastest time in the race and lost exactly one second to Friedrich.

On Sunday, the third and fourth trips will take place at 3 pm and 5 pm, respectively.

Last year at the world championship, Cipulis, for whom this is the second world championship race for crews of four, won the silver award. On the other hand, Kalenda remained without a result last year after an unsuccessful first trip to the world championship.

This season, in the World Cup, Cipulis won a shared first place in Altenberg, but climbed the podium two more times, taking the third place, and is only behind the German Francesco Friedrich in the overall standings. Kalenda has entered the top ten of the World Cup stages three times and ranks tenth in the overall standings.

The World Cup season will end with matches on the USA track in Lake Placid.
