In French athletics already in doubt before the home Olympics, the weekend brought very bad news. French pole vaulter Margot Chevrier, one of Les Bleues’ most successful athletes, fell next to the mat and fractured her left foot.

After passing 4.55 meters on her third attempt, Margot Chevrier attempted 4.65 meters but fell back into the pit, the place where athletes position the pole at the time of the push-off, in front of the mat. The 24-year-old French pole vaulter did not get up and was evacuated from the vault on a stretcher, her left leg immobilized. Visibly in great pain, she had an oxygen tank to help her breathe.

“Paris 2024, I will jump”

She was operated on on Sunday and must return to France soon. As soon as she was able to express herself on the networks, Chevrier underlined her desire to be present at the Paris Olympic Games (July 26-August 11), in five months, writing it for example in black marker on her leg bandaged: “Paris 2024, I’ll jump” (“I will jump”, in English).

Margot Chevrier had not yet achieved the Olympic minimums but her ranking at the Road to Paris, the equivalent of the Race in tennis, could protect her. Currently 15th (out of a quota of 32 qualified), her ranking will be reinforced by her 8th place in the final (she had cleared 4.55 m before her injury).

“We screw up the screws and we go back to coal,” wrote the person concerned on Instagram. In her fifth year of medicine, she knows better than anyone her chances of being present.

Last summer, France 24 followed Margot Chevrier’s preparation one year before the Olympic deadline.
