Edwin Díaz and Aroldis Chapman Almost Teammates: Mets Offered Chapman $8 Million Before Pirates’ $10.5 Million Deal

Edwin Díaz and Aroldis Chapman on the same team? It almost happened, as this week it was learned that the Cuban pitcher received an important offer from the New York Mets before signing a one-season contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported that the Cuban firefighter and the Mets were close to reaching an agreement, but the Pirates’ offer was better. “According to league sources, the Mets and Chapman were discussing a possible deal in the range of approximately $8 million before Chapman signed with Pittsburgh for $10.5 million,” the journalist explained.

It is assumed that the Mets’ idea was to have Chapman as a backup in case Díaz does not come with his best version in 2024. It should be remembered that he was injured during last year’s World Classic with Puerto Rico and could not perform throughout the season former.

The former Yankees closer, who has just won the World Series with the Texas Rangers, explained weeks ago the reason why he signed with the Pirates and rejected other organizations.

I was in talks with the Pirates, we had good communication. There were other teams, but they were a little slower. Pittsburgh became more aggressive and I made the decision to go with the Pirates, because I had given them my word. The other teams arrived later, but I already had a commitment.”Chapman told MLB.com.
