The next EM ticket has been taken. Georgia beat Greece in the play-off final and qualified for a European Championship for the first time. The penalty shootout turns into a drama, with the better ending for the Georgians, who go completely crazy after the victory.
Georgia has qualified for a European Football Championship for the first time. In the playoff final, the Georgians secured one of the last tickets for the summer finals in Germany with a shock win against Greece.
Former Bayern professional Willy Sagnol’s team beat the Greeks 4-2 on penalties on Tuesday evening. The score had previously been 0-0 after regular time and extra time. At the European Championships, the Georgians will now face Portugal, the Czech Republic and Turkey in the group stage. The team travels to the tournament in Germany as big underdogs.

In an extremely weak game, there were hardly any highlights to see for the spectators in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. Georgia’s superstar Khwitscha Kvarazchelia could hardly be staged either. Things only got heated once before the penalty shootout, when the referee suddenly handed out two red cards at halftime: one to Georgia’s substitute keeper Giorgi Loria and one to a Greek player who was probably not even in the squad. There had previously been an argument on the sidelines.
“Celebrate like you’ve never celebrated before”
In the penalty shootout, Anastasios Bakasetas and Georgios Giakoumakis missed for the Greeks. Only Georges Mikautadze missed his attempt for the hosts. When Nika Kvekveskiri safely sank the decisive penalty into the left corner, all barriers broke for the team and the stadium. Players, coaches and spectators hugged each other with joy and celebrated the greatest success in the history of the Georgian national team.
