From Welsh Rugby Star to NFL Hopeful: Louis Rees-Zammit’s Journey to the Kansas City Chiefs

After turning his back on rugby to try his hand at the NFL, Welshman Louis Rees-Zammit is expected to sign a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, recent Super Bowl winners.

His announcement had the effect of a bomb in the world of rugby. The great Welsh hope Louis Rees-Zammit, 14 tries in 31 selections with the Leek XV, decided this year to leave his sport, at only 23 years old, to try the adventure in the NFL. And he has obviously done well, since the former Cardiff winger is about to sign a contract with the winners of the last Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Rees-Zammit with Patrick Mahomes?

Let’s say it straight away, it is not yet certain that the Welshman will strengthen the attack of the reigning champions, driven by superstar Patrick Mahomes. Initially, Rees-Zammit mainly benefits from the new rules of the NFL, which now allows teams to take a 17th player in their Practice Squad (the training squad, from which teams can draw to complete their squad) , provided that this player comes from a country other than the United States.

However, the echoes reported by American journalists are generally very positive, and Rees-Zammit has rather surprised observers with his qualities. The Chiefs could use him as a running back, occasionally as a receiver, and most likely as a kick returner. The road is still long for the Welshman, but the start of his American adventure is encouraging to say the least, and his dream of playing in the NFL is not far from becoming a reality.
