Indian Wells: Paolini tops with Rybakina and Swiatek

There are five Italians at the start in the main draw of the “BNP Paribas Open”, third WTA 1000 of the season (combined with the first ATP Masters 1000 of 2024) with a prize pool of 9,258,080 dollars which is being played on the Californian hard courts of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Draws not exactly comfortable for everyone. Starting with Camila Giorgi, returning to the tour after more than a month’s break. The 32 year old from Macerata, who dropped to n.106 in the ranking, he immediately “caught” the British Katie Boulter, n.27 WTA, fresh winner of the “500” in San Diego. Between the Marche girl and the 27 year old from Leicester there are no precedents.

In the upper part of the scoreboard, the one presided over by the Polish Iga Swiatek, queen of world tennis and winner of the 2022 edition, and by the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, n.4 WTA and reigning champion, there is also Jasmine Paolini. The 28 year old from Castenuovo di Garfagnana, n.14 WTA (“best” equaled) and 13th seed, winner of her first “1000” trophy in Dubai a couple of weeks ago, will enter the match directly in the second round or against the Dutch Arantxa Rusn.48 WTA, or against the German Tatjana Maria, n.46 WTA. Possible third round for her against Kalinskaya (beaten in the United Arab Emirates final) and eighth against Rybakina or Potapova.

In the lower part of the scoreboard there is also a new challenge between Lucia Bronzettin.53 del ranking, and the Polish Magdalena Frechn.43 WTA, while Martina Trevisann.59 WTA, will debut against the French Diane Parry, n.61 in the ranking; the 30-year-old left-hander from Florence won the only precedent in three sets with the 21-year-old left-hander from Nice, played in the first round of the WTA 125 on Prague clay in 2020.

In the end Elisabetta Cocciaretto, n.60 WTA, will find the American Peyton Stearns on the other side of the net, n.64 in the ranking: there are no precedents between the 23 year old from Fermo and the 22 year old from Cincinnati, Ohio. The winner of this match will face the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, n.2 in the ranking and seeding, in the second round.
