A double-double from U SPORTS first-team all-Canadian Julia Chadwick with 25 points and 27 rebounds led the sixth-seeded Queen’s Gaels to a 69-54 upset victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies, third seed, in the second quarter-final of the 2024 U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Championship at the Saville Center in Edmonton, Alberta.
Schedule and results
Chadwick’s 27 rebounds equal his personal best set earlier this season and is the second highest total of its kind in the history of the Ù SPORTS Ultimate 8 Tournament. Brittany Read of the Regina Cougars holds the record (29) set in 2013.
“It’s an incredible performance. She’s done that for us since the start of the season, says Gaels head coach Claire Meadows. She was absolutely monstrous for us on rebounds and having that performance in the first game of nationals. »
This victory in the quarter-finals sets the stage for a replay of the OUA final as the Gaels will meet the Carleton Ravens on Saturday evening in the semi-final. SMU will face UFV in the consolation semifinals Friday night.
“We will have to play 40 minutes. I think we learned that in the OUA final,” Meadows continued. We will have to put our emphasis on that Saturday against Carleton. »
Luciana Beaumont led the Huskies with 15 points as Saint Mary’s held off Queen’s for the first three games. Alaina McMillan added 11 points, but made just four baskets on 17 shots.
Emma Weltz also added 16 points for Queen’s with her last-second three-pointer in the third quarter to put the final nail in SMU’s coffin.
The team played a close first quarter as the Gaels overturned a 7-2 deficit to take a 13-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Both teams then piled on the baskets as the Huskies and Gaels combined to rack up five three-pointers in the first five minutes of play. Weltz scored eight of his 16 points in the second quarter as the Gaels held a slim 35-30 lead at halftime.
Chadwick was dominant in the third quarter, scoring eight points and grabbing 10 rebounds, pushing the Gaels’ lead to 11 points after 30 minutes. SMU was unable to come back, scoring just five field goals on 16 shots in the fourth quarter.
The semi-final between Carleton and Queen’s will be played Saturday evening at 8 p.m. at the Saville Center while the consolation semi-final between SMU and UFV will be played on Friday at 5 p.m. (MT).
