New England Patriots Trade Mac Jones to Jacksonville Jaguars: What This Means for Both Teams

According to the network’s Adam Schefter ESPNthe New England Patriots traded quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round draft pick.

Schefter clarified that the exchange could not be official before the start date of the next season, Wednesday, March 13. Jones will also need to successfully pass physical tests.

The trade will allow Jones to play for his hometown team and spice up the race for the backup role behind starter Trevor Lawrence.

Jones will compete with CJ Beathard in the reserve role. He will be completing the final year of his rookie contract this year and will have an impact of US$4.96 million on the Jaguars’ payroll.

In 11 starts for the Patriots last season, his third with the team, Jones had 2,120 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His struggling performance caused head coach Bill Belichick to use Bailey Zappe as his starting quarterback on several occasions.

Jones, who was the 15th selection in the 2021 draft, saw his performance drop dramatically last season, being replaced by Bailey Zappe. He was 2-9 in 11 starts and threw for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

In his career, he has thrown 46 touchdown passes and suffered 36 interceptions in three campaigns.
