“You may come from somewhere completely different, but you’ll be a Frankfurter for life if you stop here,” said Timothy Chandler recently at “kicker meets DAZN” – a statement that almost certainly also applies to Peter Kunter. The Berlin native came to the Main metropolis in 1965 after stints at Eintracht Wetzlar and the then second division club Freiburger FC and stayed: the goalkeeper played 287 competitive games for Eintracht, with whom he also won the DFB Cup in 1974 and 1975.
Kunter was always more than just a goalkeeper, so he played center forward in Wetzlar in 1958/59 – and was even advised by then national coach Helmut Schön to remain an attacker. Kunter became a goalkeeper, but never concentrated solely on football. He studied German and sports, and later dentistry – he financed his studies as a footballer for Freiburger FC, for whom he played 133 times in the second division between 1961 and 1965.

In 1965, Kunter finally moved to Frankfurt and established himself in the upper house there, but he did not give up studying: on December 8, 1969, he received his doctorate at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. Between 1965 and 1976 he was a player for the SGE, and in his last four years he worked as a dentist at the same time; In 1972, Kunter opened his first practice in Frankfurt.
The just 1.76 meter long Kunter also knocked on the door of the national team, so he was part of the extended circle in 1972 – but he was never allowed to play in the DFB jersey. For years, however, Kunter was Eintracht’s record goalkeeper in terms of Bundesliga games; it was only in May 2023 that the “flying dentist”‘s 234 first league appearances were surpassed by Kevin Trapp.
Even after his professional career ended, Kanter remained connected to Eintracht and was vice-president of the club from 1977 to 1979. Now Kunter has died after a short, serious illness at the age of 82, as Eintracht Frankfurt announced on Monday, citing his family.
