On March 30 and 31, 14 teams will compete in the 19th edition of the Cornouaille International Tournament at the Créac’h Gwen stadium in Quimper.
It is one of the flagship events of the Rugby Club Quimpérois and the only tournament for the cadet categories in the west of France. The Cornouaille International Tournament returns on March 30 and 31 at the Créac’h Gwen stadium in Quimper. “We give young people in these age categories the opportunity to meet and at the same time we promote rugby and the local club,” says Jean-Hervé Lacroix, member of the organizing committee.
Saturday is reserved for qualifying matches. Based on pools of eight teams, each of them plays four 20-minute matches. In the women’s tournament, the groups are made up of three teams and the matches will last 30 minutes. The next day, new groups will be created based on the results to make way for the final stages.
Who will win?
In this 19th edition, 14 teams are competing. 10 are male: Sud 29 Rugby, RUPL, RC Paris-Neuilly, Rugby Vlaanderen (Flemish selection), LBFR (French-speaking Belgian Rugby League), COC Rugby, Grandchamp Vannes, Launceston RFC, Rugby Côtes-d’Armor and RC Plabennec, and four are female: CD29/CD22, RC FPDB, Powergirls (Belgian selection) and Plabennec Morlaix. “Some come from very far away, others have participated for many years, which proves the interest and recognition of the tournament,” underlines Jean-Hervé Lacroix.
Among the boys, the Belgian Francophone Rugby League has won the last three editions of the Tournament (2019, 2022 and 2023) and is the big favorite. The local team, Sud 29 Rugby, intends to perform well at home and surprise the Flemish Rugby Vlaanderen and the English from Launceston. “We want to go as far as possible in the competition and, if possible, win it and put our name on the shield,” hopes the organizer. On the girls’ side, the Belgian selection of Powergirls, winners last year, “are clearly above the rest”.
