Skelly Alvero experienced the highlight of his time at Werder so far last Sunday. After being substituted, he scored the next goal against Hoffenheim. Decisions about the Frenchman’s future will be made in the summer…

If the scene had a symbolic character, it could sound like this: “Hello, look, I’m still here!” With his late goal to make the final score 1-2 last Sunday, beautifully scored with the heel of his right foot, Skelly Alvero was skillfully remembered in an unusual role. This time the Frenchman was on the field for around 20 minutes after being substituted on – far more than in the two previous games in which Ole Werner had brought him off the bench at the end of the game.
Werner: “Strengths in the area behind”
The idea that the coach had with his measure to perhaps bring about a turnaround in the game worked, at least partially. “Skelly is not primarily responsible for the goal threat. But he was there in the situation, we threw a lot forward and wanted him to have more power in the penalty area. It paid off,” said the coach. The move is of course not a model for the future, says Werner. “Despite all of that – he’s not the top goalscorer yet. If he becomes one, we won’t have anything against it! But above all, he has his strengths in the area one step behind.” There, however, again with the great robustness that the 21-year-old brings with him thanks to his impressive body: 93 kilograms spread over a height of 2.02 meters.
Fritz: “We are absolutely satisfied”
Go or stay? This is the decision that those responsible in Bremen have to make in the summer regarding the loan from Olympique Lyon. “Now we want to wait for the next few weeks and I think that he will get his playing time,” said licensing department manager Clemens Fritz about the talented midfielder in the run-up to the Hoffenheim game.
“There wasn’t that much reason to make changes in midfield. The boys there did well. It’s important for Skelly to stick with it and continue to offer himself.” As we all know, a door always opens in football. “Of course you have to go through them. There will always be changes, we have players with yellow cards, a few injuries. So he will definitely get playing time. We can then get a comprehensive picture.”
From the impressions so far, Alvero, who once received his first professional contract at his training club FC Sochaux, has apparently aroused interest in more from the Bremen team, despite the short lead time in new surroundings. “It’s obviously not an easy moment to change during a winter break, in the middle of the season, without any preparation. It’s about integration into the team. He implemented that really well,” said Fritz. “We can already see in training where his qualities lie. The situation now is that we still have time before a decision is made. The way he is doing it now, in training and in general, we are quite satisfied.”
