The Birth of the 1st National Youth Games: A Milestone for Colombian Sports

The 1st National Youth Games were born with the aim of strengthening the country’s sports turnover and according to Decree 1052 of 2022, they constitute the competitive competition at the beginning of the national sports cycle. This year will be framed in the history of young sports in Colombia, as it will become the first in which these games are held, which already have their fundamental card.

Resolution 0001000 of February 28, 2024, “by which the Fundamental Sports Charter of the I National Youth Games, Eje Cafetero 2024, conventional and Paralympic sector is promulgated”, establishes the path to follow for the realization of the multi-sport event , the structure, duration, the sports modalities called, athletes fit and eligible to participate, the registration process, judging and the specific functions of each of the members who will make up the organizing committee, among others.

Within this letter it was established that the I National Youth Games will be held in the program of the 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games, with the exception of those that, due to their development or infrastructure conditions, cannot be held at the venues and sub-venues of the games. .

Called sports

Thus, there will be 38 sports from the conventional sector that will be in these games that will be held in the Coffee Region, three of them for exhibition: sport climbing (routes and speed), field hockey and rowing. The others will be: archery, athletics, badminton, sports dance, basketball, handball, softball, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, water skiing, gymnastics, golf, judo, karate do, weightlifting, wrestling , swimming, skating, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rugby sevens, surfing, squash, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting sports, triathlon, sailing and volleyball.

For its part, the Paranational Games will have 15 sports in the Paralympic sector, two of them for exhibition: paraarchery and parasport shooting. The remaining ones are: wheelchair basketball, boccia, PC football, football for the blind, goalball, for athletics, for badminton, paracycling, visual judo, for swimming, for powerlifting, for table tennis, wheelchair tennis and rugby wheelchair bound.

Athlete registration

For these I National Youth Games, athletes from the previous category to the open category or seniors may participate and will have three phases for proper registration. Initially, the departmental sports entities, the Capital District and the Military Sports Federation will have until March 31, 2024, to make their intention to participate in sports and modalities.

Subsequently, the administrative registration process, in the conventional sector, for the long list will be until June 9, 2024 and, in the Paralympic sector, until June 30. This step continues to be mandatory, to complete the nominal registration process.

Finally, the nominal registration of those selected, which will be carried out by the departmental sports entities, Capital District and the Military Sports Federation, before the general direction of the I National Youth Games will be until October 9, 2024, in the conventional sector , and until the 30th of the same month, in the Paralympic.

Qualifying events

The technical direction of the games will coordinate with each federation regarding the programming and execution of the qualifying events, in accordance with the regulatory standards and the agreed selection criteria.

In this way, the path for the I National Youth Games was laid out. As of November 9, the Coffee Axis will once again be the epicenter of sport in Colombia by 2024, the year in which a fundamental step is taken to strengthen the process of development and improvement of the country’s sporting talent.
