The Rise of Pickleball: A Sport Loved by Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been playing pickleball for quite some time now. The family came into contact through her mother. She even organizes tournaments with her foundation. According to Katy, pickleball is even better than padel. It is already quite large in North America, but in Europe it is still scarce. However, the number of pickleball courts is growing more. What is this sport that Katy Perry loves so much?

Wat is pickleball

Pickleball is a relative of the racket sports. You play it on a course of 13.41 meters by 6.09 meters. It can be played in duos or with four people. It is a mixture of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The sport is easy to get started with. The rules are simple. People of all ages have the opportunity to play pickleball. So play it with your friends, children or parents! There is always room to play competitively, but this is not a requirement to enjoy pickleball.

Where is it from?

In 1965, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum invented the game of pickleball in the United States. It started in Joel’s backyard. Joel and Bill’s children were bored out of their minds. To give the children something to do, Joel and Bill came up with pickleball. There was an old badminton court in the backyard. The men went into the shed looking for badminton rackets. They couldn’t find any, so they started with table tennis bats. There was also no shuttle or tennis ball, so the only option was a light ball with holes. Joel and Bill went to play and it turned out to be a big hit with the kids.

Barney was told the game a few days later. Together with Joel and Bill they discussed the rules. The inspiration was badminton, but the game also had its own rules. The most important thing for the gentlemen was the fun for young and old while playing; the entire family should enjoy it.

The design of the racket has also gone through many stages. Of course it started with old table tennis bats, but that wasn’t quite it. Barney’s son, David, started developing a perfect design. He tried many designs, but the real design came from Arlen Paranto. He designed airplanes and therefore knew exactly how to make lightweight products. He applied a honeycomb pattern to the center of the racket to keep it light, but sturdy so it doesn’t break right away.

Difference between pickleball and padel

First of all, the racket you play with is different. In pickleball it is a thin, long plastic bat, while in padel you use a thicker racket with holes in it. The ball you play with is also a completely different thing. The padel ball resembles a tennis ball and is almost the same. The ball in pickleball is made of plastic, hollow and has all kinds of holes. This gives a different effect. The bouncing is especially different. There is another difference involved. In padel, in addition to the ground and the air, you also use the wall. You can use the entire space when playing padel. In pickleball you don’t have a cage around you. Just like with most racket sports, you have a net in the middle. The net hangs at waist height for lots of fun. The last big difference is in the field. This is larger in padel. The layout is also different. Padel looks the same as tennis, pickleball has a no volley zone at the net.
