TSB Ravensburg Judokas Kick Off Season in 2nd Bundesliga with Tough Competition Ahead

The season in the 2nd Bundesliga begins for the judokas of TSB Ravensburg on Saturday in the Kuppelnauhalle. The newcomer meets the Rhineland judo team from Bad Ems. It starts at 5 p.m. and the Oberzell fanfare procession plays to get you in the mood. The fight starts at 5:30 p.m.

Two seven fights each

According to TSB coach Uli Rothenhäusler, seven men will fight in seven weight classes, and the order of the weight classes will be drawn. A maximum of two foreigners are allowed to fight per team. After the seven fights there is a break, then the rematches begin. “At least two new athletes have to join the team,” says Rothenhäusler. In order to win the team competition, the Ravensburgers would have to win at least eight of the 14 matches.

The Rhineland judo team has eight fighters from Georgia and Ukraine and is peppered with strong foreigners. However, it remains to be seen who of the 32 registered fighters will make their way to Ravensburg.

The core team of the Upper Swabians consists of many “real TSB judokas,” as Rothenhäusler says. “Almost everyone was already there in the children’s area when Takahide Haraguchi trained the children as a FSJ member in Ravensburg in 2014.”

Students can train with other clubs

In recent years, the TSB has repeatedly managed to qualify for the 2nd Bundesliga, and this season the Ravensburgers have now taken the step. “The problem is that some Ravensburg fighters are now studying and can only train irregularly in Ravensburg,” says Rothenhäusler. However, you can train with other clubs at your place of study.

New participants include 16-year-old Matteo Gruber, Austrian youth champion, and 21-year-old Khangarel Batkhuyag, Austrian junior national champion. However, Gruber will be missing on Saturday as he fights for Austria at the European Cup in Porec.

It’s against two relegated teams and the defending champion

The core of the TSB team consists of Arne Böhm, Konstantin Lehmann (up to 60 kilograms), Niklas Böhm, Elias Kühn (up to 66 kilograms), Luca Guilbaut (up to 73 kilograms), Marco Frey (up to 81 kilograms) and Robin Weiler (up to 90 kilograms). In order to be able to keep the class, the home fights should be won if possible.

According to Rothenhäusler, it will be “very, very difficult” for the young Ravensburg team on the trips to VfL Sindelfingen, JC Rüsselsheim (both relegated from the 1st Bundesliga) and 1. JT Heidelberg-Mannheim (defending champions).
