Xabi Alonso to Stay at Bayer Leverkusen as Liverpool Seeks Klopp Successor

Xabi Alonso will continue to be Bayer Leverkusen’s coach in the 2024/25 season. The Spaniard announced this on Friday.

This also means: Liverpool must continue to look for a successor for Jürgen Klopp (56), who in turn will quit with the “Reds” at the end of the season.

Ahead of Sunday’s game against Brighton, Klopp reacted to the news. Klopp: “I can talk about a young coach who is doing well. When I was in a similar situation at a club, I did pretty much the same thing and never looked back.”

And further: “He’s doing an incredible job there. Leverkusen have a good team and they will probably keep the team together. That’s a possibility, and it’s not like that every year. So I understand that he wants to do that. I have nothing to say about the other things. That’s it.”

For Alonso, that wasn’t it under the Bayer Cross!

This makes the coaching carousel in Europe even more interesting. More top clubs than ever before (including Bayern, Liverpool, Barça, Ajax) are looking for new coaches for the coming season.

Liverpool at least has a plan B with Ruben Amorim (39) from Sporting Lisbon. Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeneß (41) is also said to be on the extended list as Klopp’s successor, as is Franck Haise (52/RC Lens) and Klopp assistant Pepijn Lijnders ( 41).

Klopp and Alonso could potentially meet again this season – but only in the Europa League final.

By then, Liverpool would also like to have found a successor for its iconic coach. However, this will definitely not be Alonso.
