Young Czech Tennis Player Jakub Menšík Shines at Indian Wells Masters Tournament, Plíšková and Williams Face Early Exits

Eighteen-year-old Czech tennis player Jakub Menšík has had a successful debut at Masters tournaments. In the first round in Indian Wells, he beat Korean Hong Song-chan 6:3 and 6:4.

Menšík’s entry into the match against the opponent from the qualification did not work out and he lost 1:3.

However, he then won the next seven games in a row and won in the first round in his fifth start in the main competition on the ATP circuit.

His next opponent will be American Ben Shelton in the round of 16.

On the other hand, the former world number one Karolína Plíšková did not manage the opening match, losing 1:6, 6:2 and 4:6 to Anna Blinková from Russia.

Plíšková lost the first set in 25 minutes, but in the second, she did not give Blinková a chance and equalized.

In the deciding set, the 31-year-old Czech lost serve at 2:2, and the Russian already maintained the advantage. In Indian Wells, Plíšková was eliminated in the first round for only the second time in her career.

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacka succeeded in it. The Dane, who returned to tennis this year after a three-year maternity break, beat China’s Chu Lin 7:6 and 6:1 and will face Donna Vekicová from Croatia in the second round.

In Indian Wells, where she won the title in 2011, the 33-year-old Wozniacki made her debut after five years.

On the other hand, the seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams did not succeed. In her first start since last year’s US Open, the 43-year-old American lost 6:2, 3:6 and 0:6 to Nao Hibinová from Japan.

The former world number one led 3:2 in the second set, but then lost the next ten games.
