Targeted by Gonzaga, center Zach Edey still produced 27 points and 14 rebounds in an 86-80 victory for Purdue University on Friday night to bring them within one game of the final four .
Edey was pushed and shoved by his opponents. He even received a slap in the face, but the 2.24 m (7 ft 4 in) Torontonian did not falter.
Purdue will continue its path to men’s college basketball honors on Sunday. Their opponent will be the University of Tennessee.
Edey has declared his intention not to return to Purdue for a third year of college and will try his luck in the NBA draft.
His transition to professional basketball, however, is difficult to project. His extraordinary size makes him a formidable interior player at the college level, but in the NBA, players in his position are called upon to be more versatile, capable of passing and participating in the transition game. Some experts predict that he could be chosen near the end of the first of two draft rounds in the next auction.
Edey represented Canada at the FIBA World Cup last summer, when the national team secured its place at the Olympic Games for the first time in 24 years. He only played 5 games and averaged 3.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in a supporting role.
