Hajime! The Touraine Judo Club, chaired by the ever-passionate Lionel Hérin, organized this Saturday the 21st edition of the Tours International Masters, an event labeled Excellence.
And the least we can say is that once again the event was a success! Ten years after the death of André Van Hauwe, the Masters brought together a large audience and even recognized personalities such as Philippe Taurines, former coach of the French Olympic team and renowned judoka. “It’s been a while since I’ve been to Tours, so it’s always a pleasure to see Lionel again (read) and his entire organizing team. As usual, there is a high level and the tournament is always very friendly”he rejoiced.

Dominant judokas from Île de France
On the tatami, 462 veteran judokas participated in the Masters with the aim of preparing as best as possible, for the majority of fighters, for the European Championships which will take place in Bosnia from June 6 to 9.
For some, it is even the world championships in Las Vegas, at the beginning of November, which are in their sights. However, we can note the last minute absence of Christophe Manette, the favorite in his under 81 kg category, who had to withdraw due to a small hamstring injury.
Even if he did not want to take any risks while fighting, the resident of UJTM37 was present as a referee: “I volunteered as I couldn’t fight. Even if I’m not the most professional when it comes to refereeing, I’m doing my part. It’s the judo spirit,” smiles Christophe Manette. In terms of performances, the titles in each category very often went to judokas from clubs in Île de France, one of the most represented regions.

Many foreign fighters at the meeting
The fighters from Indre-et-Loire were invited to several podiums, notably in the under 73 kg category with the local Mignol (JC Touraine) in M7, and Volte (Saint-Avertin Sports) in M5. Beyond the French, it was the arrival of foreign fighters that caused a lot of noise in this Masters. Belgians, Swiss, English, Spanish, a Finn, an Austrian and even an American had come.
The latter, James Kinder, was present for the second time in Tours. The 70-year-old judoka, victorious in the M9 category of less than 81 kg, admitted to being a lover of Touraine. In short, the International Judo Masters was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful events of this spring weekend in Tours.
