Alize Cornet will play her last professional tournament at the French Open in Roland Garros.

In an interview on the French “Canal+” Alize Cornet announced the end of her career after the upcoming French Open. The 34-year-old Frenchwoman had actually set herself the goal of taking part in the Olympic Games in Roland Garros. The 2022 game year was quite promising for the former world number 11, but after that the ranking continued to decline. Most recently, she had to endure eight first-round defeats in a row, which is reflected in her current ranking of 107th and is therefore not sufficient to qualify for the Olympics.

Cornet was able to look back on a successful career, especially at Grand Slam level. She started in Roland Garros for the first time in 2005 with a wildcard and hasn’t missed any of the following editions of the clay major since then. The six-time WTA title holder has competed in all Grand Slam tournaments since the Australian Open in 2007. With 69 major events played in a row, she is the sole record holder among women.

Even if the really big titles aren’t in her portfolio, Cornet’s fearless style of play meant she was always feared even by the absolute top players. Among other things, she was able to triumph against Serena Williams three times in a row and ended the 37-match winning streak of the current world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland at Wimbledon in 2022.

In addition to numerous congratulations from former player colleagues, she was particularly touched by the words of Rafael Nadal, who has already made a lasting mark in the history books of Roland Garros with his 14 title wins. Alize Cornet’s captivating laugh will definitely be missed on the WTA tour soon.
