Alleghany High School set to welcome new head football coach in 2024

Alleghany High School in Sparta is set to have a new head football coach in 2024.

Previous head coach Noah Lyon confirmed with HighSchoolOT that he is retiring. Zach Bennett was named the next head coach. Bennett has been Alleghany’s head baseball coach since 2010.

Lyon took over the job in 2017 after he served as the athletic director at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. The coach led the Trojans to the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 1A West playoffs five times, including in his final season. Alleghany finished with a 4-7 overall record last season after falling on the road at Mountain Island Charter in a close 27-22 game. Lyon’s best season came in 2018, when the 6-seeded Trojans defeated 11-seed East Columbus in the first round of the 1A West playoffs and then fell to 3-seed Murphy on the road in the second round. That Alleghany team finished with a 7-6 overall record.
