An effective drawing: Luis Carrión’s Oviedo has not changed its tactics since his arrival on the bench

A multitude of options in a drawing that does not vary. Luis Carrión, Oviedo coach, has the 4-2-3-1 between his eyebrows. He likes it, it convinces him, and very often, it works for him.

Real Oviedo has been using this scheme since the arrival of the Catalan coach to the blue bench back in September 2023 and it has rarely changed. Sometimes he does it in the last stages of the games, when the team is not convincing, adding two forwards and moving to a 4-4-2 with everything on the attack. A much more offensive way of playing than that of his predecessor, Álvaro Cervera, who used five defenders at the same time to avoid rival attacks, something that he did not achieve, since he only added three points out of eighteen. Everything changed against Valladolid. The blues lost the game –Carrión had been in charge of Oviedo for a few days–, but something changed in the Carbayona ship.

There are several conditions that explain the elevens that the Catalan coach deploys before starting the games. The first and most important (because it completely determines), the injured. The second is at your discretion. There is no doubt in the goal. Leo Román has been the defender of Oviedo’s three sticks since the first game of the season and has achieved great numbers, being one of the goalkeepers with the fewest goals scored in the competition. The defense is not too much of a headache for Carrión either: Viti and Bretones on the sides and Luengo and Calvo in the center of the defense. Viti came on to replace Lucas when he was injured in December and has remained there despite the full recovery of his teammate. Then he did it for Costas, who is still in the infirmary. Even so, the Basque center back is one of the most stable players on the squad.

At the top of the attack, there are three men that Carrión has. There are more, like Masca or Dubasin, who could play as center forwards. However, the coach has another place for them. Bastón, Alemão and Millán fight for the “9” position. The first, the Madrid native, has played practically the entire season, until he was injured at the end of March, a week in which he no longer played and in which Alemão came on. Since then, the Brazilian has always started. Millán’s case is somewhat more complex, since he has been injured all season. After his recovery, he has only had minutes as a revulsive, although it is not ruled out that one day Carrión decides to count on him. But where the problems really come is when choosing the center of the field. There are two immovable ones: Moyano and Colombatto. The first, on the left wing, is the blue player with the most minutes this season along with Leo Román and ties in goals with Bastón (8). The second, the Argentine, is a fixture in the center of the field. He is one of the players with the most minutes and has always acted as an anchor between the attack and the blue defense. Luismi is usually accompanying him, but after his injury in the match against Mirandés, Carrión decided to test Homenchenko, with a somewhat bitter result: he was sent off in the first half against Cartagena. When Luismi was not playing, the Catalan had always used Jimmy. Now, after the Andalusian’s injury and Homenchenko’s suspension, the youth player has all the numbers to be the lucky one to accompany Colombatto.

For the midfielder, there are many players that Carrión has tried. When Cazorla is there, the man from Llanera usually occupies this position. Dubasin or Paulino have also played this role on occasion. But without a doubt, the favorite at the moment is Seoane. Since the double European champion’s injury, the Madrid native has started every game.

But without a doubt, one of the positions that varies the most is that of the far right. In almost all positions there are more or less permanent players, who, if they change, do so every few games. On the right lane, Paulino, Masca and Dubasin take turns practically game by game. Carrión, choose according to the rival and the feelings during the week. Be that as it may, Oviedo is still in a privileged position, so Carrión seems to have found the key after the bad start to the league. If they win this afternoon (4:15 p.m., LaLigaTV), Oviedo could sleep in the play-off positions again. But the important thing is to be there for the last game, as Carrión always emphasizes.
