Athletic runs into the pride of Granada

The Champions League gets complicated in San Mamés with a 1-1 that does not serve the Andalusians either but rewarded their commitment

MADRID, 19 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Athletic Club failed (1-1) against Granada this Friday at the start of matchday 32 of LaLiga EA Sports, adding a point that may be insufficient in its attempt to reach fourth place in the final stretch of the season and equally scarce for the complicated ballot of Andalusians in search of permanence.

Due to the stage and performance, Granada felt proud in San Mamés. After the victory against Alavés, José Ramón Sandoval’s men have decided to fight until the end, even if they need a miracle to save themselves, and against the Copa del Rey champion they stood up for many minutes and fought for every ball.

The Nasrid team had a great presentation in La Catedral, circling the rival goal until the 0-1 scoreline was signed by Gerard Gumbau from the corner kick. Almost an Olympic goal, with a light touch from Iñaki Williams at the near post. However, Athletic Club had an immediate reaction and soon earned the tie.

The emergence of Nico Williams complicated the visitors and, on a loose ball in the area, Guruzeta made it 1-1. The forward himself had the double shortly after, but Ignasi Miquel took it between the sticks. Granada looked for their forwards whenever they could and Athletic responded in kind, making the half intense.

In the second half, Sandoval’s team defended better and Ernesto Valverde’s team came in less. Iñaki forced a good intervention from goalkeeper Batalla and Granada did not hesitate to bite to keep the ‘lions’ out of their domain, with a good match between Yuri and Bruno Mendez. In the end, Iñaki forgave again.

Thus, Granada found at least its reward for its effort in a demanding outing such as San Mamés to add 18 points, ten points away from salvation with one more game. Meanwhile, Athletic, fifth, remains three points behind Atlético de Madrid, fourth, although with one more game as well. Next week, Valverde’s men will visit their direct rival in the ‘Champions’ zone.
