Austria Salzburg submitted further documents for a license for the second Bundesliga to the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) late on Monday evening, within the protest period. One hopes for a “benevolent assessment,” says Austria President Claus Salzmann.

In the first instance, the ÖFB refused Austria the license – more on this in No second division license for Austria Salzburg for the time being (salzburg.ORF.at; April 12, 2024). That’s why SV Austria Salzburg submitted additional documents to finance game operations in professional football. SV Austria Salzburg did not manage to find another major sponsor. The club emphasized that financing for a second division season was still secured.

Steyr as an alternative stadium

The alternative stadium required by the ÖFB for the arena in Salzburg-Maxglan for high-risk games with increased police deployment should be in Steyr (Upper Austria). Documents were subsequently submitted for this, says Salzmann: “We submitted the documents that were required for these games in the form of confirmation from the magistrate, in the form of the mayor’s confirmation and, logically, the declaration of consent from SV Steyr with a rental agreement. And I don’t quite understand why Austria needs additional confirmation again. I assume that we will be treated the same as all other clubs.” However, the requested confirmation from the police in Steyr could not be provided.

ORF For games “with increased police deployment”, Austria would move from Salzburg-Maxglan to Steyr

“Some points may not be met 100 percent”

The Bundesliga should examine the subsequently submitted documents and decide again – by April 29th at the latest. On Tuesday, Salzmann assessed the chances of a license being granted in the second instance: “There are of course some points that we may not fulfill 100 percent, but if the ÖFB is interested in Austria Salzburg playing in the second league, Perhaps this will be viewed favorably for Austria.”

He sees “no knock-out criteria,” added Salzman. “If there are things that we really don’t fulfill, then we have to register that we are really still too weak – and we will then try to maybe achieve promotion in another season.” If we were rejected again, that would still be the case going to neutral arbitration. But Austria says it “probably doesn’t want that”.

Second league would be difficult in terms of sport

If Austria gets the license and is promoted to the second Bundesliga, the next season will be difficult in terms of sport – Salzmann has no illusions about that. Basically, the idea would have been to “bring in five or six professionals, which is of course a high monetary outlay. And we have now decided to use as many of our own players as possible and with the support of our fans to perhaps prevent immediate relegation from the second division with a mini-budget.”
