Balcarce: brave silversides deep in the mountains

In order not to fail in our attempts, in each survey we look for data on the local spike through references and friends. On this occasion it was the contribution of our friend Diego –Taty– Mancino, member of the Balcarce Fishing Club commission, who convinced us and was waiting with an excellent cabin on the La Brava lagoon. A magnificent area surrounded by mountains from the Tandilia system and, perhaps, one of the most picturesque in the region. Buenos Aires province, with an area of almost 600 hectares of green waters that are reflected between mountains, planted fields and very picturesque ranches. As a plus, the offer of interesting silversides, both in length and weight, which are not given away.

Among the featured services is the Balcarce Fishing Club, located at Km 39 of RP 226, a fishing boat that has more than 40 boats, two docks of more than 100 m, a very neat loading of material boats for those who travel with their own boat, supplies, surveillance, toilets, groves of trees, parking, grills with benches and games for the more boys. In addition, two advantages for fishermen: the first is that there is no motorization limit; the second, the club’s latest acquisition: a boat with a motor for rescues.
We arrived on a Sunday afternoon after eating a delicious suckling pig that Taty and her family treated us to in the cabin. Lunch was in the company of Alan Ruiz, a great local fisherman, owner of the boat on which we boarded, very well equipped and 6 m long. At 4:30 p.m. we were heading towards an area where the morning fishermen had landed more than 40 large pieces. The reference was a nearby chalet, located just 5 minutes from the dock. We had two and a half hours to carry out this survey, since for the next day the forecast called for rain and more than 60 km of wind from the southeast quadrant.

We put together teams of rods of more than 4.30 m. This is because the lines to be used in this area are the Cordoban line – also called creeping –, formed by three branch lines more than one meter apart, with classic size No. 2 hooks and with an initial double bow stick buoy; As an annex, a rubber pointer weighing no more than 30 grams, but sliding between knots to find distance and depth (15 cm from the bottom). The other alternative is the conventional line of two buoys more than 3 m apart, with branches one and a half meters long. In both cases, that is because The average depth of the mirror is around 3 m, with sectors of more than 4.5 m like the one we were fishing for. It only took 10 minutes of casting the rigs for Alan to have an answer: a first specimen of only 30 cm fishing afloat. For its part, Taty and the writer had responses like catfish and toothy people. As bait we were trying the different variants of mojarras that we had stocked up on at the local fishing house.

The bites

The clock seemed to be ticking faster than desired as we tested lines and depths. The key: toothfish fillet from the same lagoon as companion bait for the mojarra. With that tip we achieved the first sizes of 45 cm, which within a few minutes grew to 50 cm and we even achieved several doublets. A more than surprising battle due to the depth, which we concluded at 7:20 p.m. knowing that we were at the limit of departure time. we had achieved quality and quantity as for a little picture just by doing your homework well.
It is key in La Brava know where the silverside is, since it is a deep lagoon with cutwaters, bays and tributaries. Due to the characteristics of the mirror, and so as not to fail, we suggest that those who go for the first time speak with a representative of the fishing club, with someone from the supply store located in front of the lagoon or from the fishing house where the bait is purchased. . The silverside in this area is of quality but is not given as a gift and you have to be in tune to catch it, because it is seeded and moves constantly. It is essential carry different types of lines, including the famous chiripá, as well as the paternoster or cordobesa, in addition to pointers of various weights. As a highlight, the mirror received more than 200 mm of rainfall in recent days, optimal for it to maintain its level this season.

Without a doubt, at the close of this edition La Brava is on the podium of lagoons in the province of Buenos Aires, since many are suffering from lack of water. If we add to this the services so that the fishing family can enjoy a more than pleasant weekend, the combo is assured. Balcarce must be kept in mind to pay a visit and return for its good silversides.
