Bank card hacks increase – El Sol de México

José Veyra was resting at home when his cell phone suddenly rang with a notification from his banking application about a charge of 300 pesos to his credit card. For Veyra it was a surprise because he had not made any purchases at that time.

“I received notification of this charge and immediately called my bank to report the charges. During the call, the guy who answered me told me that he found two additional charges and an attempted purchase on Amazon. Given this, the card was canceled,” Veyra told El Sol de México.

According to the Cyberattack Risk Index of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), these types of attacks rose 700 percent in the last three years, with last year being the highest point for this indicator, with a total of eight points.

The central bank added that between 2020 and 2021 alone, bank card information thefts skyrocketed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in a context in which work, purchases and other activities were done digitally. .

Veyra assured that she does not usually enter her card information on any website. However, a few months ago his son purchased a video game online and believes that his data could have been stolen there.

This type of fraud consists of cybercriminals stealing bank card information by deceiving users through fake emails or text messages, known as phishing, or by stealing information from websites, indicated the cybersecurity company Kaspersky.

“One of the main threats for users is to blindly trust any website when entering our cards, and it is a culture that we have to change, since even large companies can suffer security breaches,” Fabio said in an interview. Assolini, director of the Research and Analysis Team for Latin America at Kaspersky.

The modus operandi, once the card data is obtained, consists of making online purchases, cloning the cards, committing fraud or even extortion to recover the information; also for sale on the black market, Assolini explained.

According to an investigation by the cybersecurity company NordVPN, which evaluated eight clandestine online markets, it revealed that worldwide there are nearly six million bank card details that were stolen. Of this figure, 156 thousand belong to Mexican institutions.

The cybersecurity company noted that more than 60 percent of the cards were sold along with other personal data of the victim, such as their address, telephone number, email address or even date of birth.

Regarding the amounts, NordVPN stated that the average price for credit card information is usually 115 pesos in clandestine markets or even on platforms or social networks, such as Telegram or Facebook.

For Kaspersky, it is possible to prevent or solve the theft of bank data, so it recommends activating purchase alerts for your bank cards, as well as avoiding leaving data on websites after entering them as a payment method.

“Some institutions even allow the use of a virtual card for online purchases and monthly service payments, which change the data periodically and even if it is stolen, it is more difficult for the information to match,” added Assolini.
