The challenges that really count in 2024 begin: in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, everything is ready for the European Olympic Qualification Championshipsecond appointment for Italian male and female wrestlers who want to get to Paris and play their chances.
The tournament is reserved for European wrestlers and offers 36 Olympic passes, two for each weight category (18 in total) in the three styles. The two winners of each semi-final will therefore automatically be launched towards Paris 2024, without the need to compete in either the gold or bronze finals.
The Italian national team presents itself for the occasion with a team made up of 16 athletes, including freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers and freestyle wrestlers. This is the team that will attempt the climb: Simone Piroddu (57 kg), Frank Chamizo (74 kg), Aron Caneva (86 kg), Benjamin Honis (97 kg), Abraham Conyedo (125 kg) for freestyle; Jacopo Sandron (60 kg), Andrea Setti (67 kg), Riccardo Abbrescia (77 kg), Leon Rivalta (87 kg), Nikoloz Kakhelashvili for the Greco-Roman; Emanuela Liuzzi (50 kg), Maria Ferone (53 kg), Aurora Russo (57 kg), Elena Esposito (62 kg) Dalma Caneva (68 kg), Enrica Rinaldi (76 kg).
A team that goes from the most experienced of the Azzurri, Frank Chamizo, born in ’92, to the youngest of all, Aurora Russo, born in 2003 and world and European champion among the juniors. Among them, many continental medalists, from Dalma Caneva to Enrica Rinaldi, passing through the Olympic bronze medalist Abraham Conyedo, and many possible “surprises”.
The race programstructured over 3 days, is as follows:
- Friday 5 April Greco-Roman Wrestling
- Saturday 6 April Women’s Free Wrestling
- Sunday 7 April Men’s Free Wrestling
Each day will begin with the preliminary matches at 8:30 am (Italian time), while the qualifying semi-finals will take place starting from 4:00 pm.
The event will be broadcast live on UWW channels, using Plus access. Articles at the end of each day of competition will be on the FIJLKAM website.
