Darts: After winning the professional tournament, Schindler comes back with an average of 109

There are athletes who fall into a hole after the greatest success of their career. Not so Martin Schindler. The 27-year-old won his first tournament on the professional tour last weekend, the International Darts Open. In the final of Riesa, an event on the European Tour, he defeated world champion Gerwyn Price 8:5.

Since the 13-event tournament series is already stopping in Sindelfingen this weekend, there was little time to process the special moment. Maybe not bad for the young German. In any case, Schindler delivered the continuation of last weekend at the European Darts Grand Prix in the Glass Palace. Against the strong Dutchman Gian van Veen, “The Wall” scored an impressive average of 108.82 points per shot.

World class, which resulted from five 180s, a double rate of 60 percent and was garnished with a 121 high finish. In the end it was a clear 6:2. “It was a very good game, especially at the back. I had great moments, scored well, and the timing was also good,” said Schindler. “Of course I wanted to follow up on Riesa, but I was warned. Gian is a very strong player, a great Dutch talent. One of the mega talents we have on tour. Thank you, Sindelfingen. Thank you very much.”

The days between the two tournaments weren’t that different than usual, the Strausberger continued. He had expected more interview requests and was very busy with himself and his emotional world after the triumph. He decided not to change his approach: “I’m not saying that I want to win every tournament because I won one once. I just want to play well. If I always play consistently good darts, I’ll get further.”

Schindler meets Cross

This will also be necessary against the number six in the world in the second round on Saturday (live from 1 p.m. on DAZN). Schindler will meet the Englishman Rob Cross in the evening around 9 p.m., like Price, who already has world championship honors.

An exciting duel, which is topped by another second round match. Luke Humphries, seeded as one of the ProTour’s top 16 for the second round, and Luke Littler will meet in the new edition of the 2024 World Cup final. Littler won 6-0 against former German junior champion Arno Merk.

And Gabriel Clemens also reached Saturday. The German number two defeated René Eidams confidently 6:1, “I was warned, I had lost to René several times before. But it was a relatively simple game. Hopefully tomorrow it will be the same,” said Clemens, who managed seven perfect darts in the fifth leg and is now waiting for the next duel against a compatriot. The “German Giant” meets Ricardo Pietreczko in the last match of Saturday evening.

“We have to get used to it. There are now a lot of Germans on the tour, so this will happen more often in the future,” says Clemens: “The English aren’t complaining either.”
