Domantas Sabonis broke the NBA record for most double-doubles in a season with 73 on Friday in a 101-100 loss of the Sacramento Kings at the hands of the Boston Celtics.
Sabonis started the match tied with the legendary Hakeem Olajuwon, who had 72 doubles during the 1992-93 season.
It was Sabonis’ 60th consecutive double-double, the best streak since 1970.
Sabonis finished the game with 16 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. Teammate De’Aaron Fox also excelled in a losing cause, scoring 40 points.
The prowess of Sabonis and Fox wasn’t enough for the Kings to beat the Celtics, who are an impressive 34-3 at home this season. Boston has won its last four games.
Xavier Tillman scored the basket that made the difference with seven seconds left. The Kings then missed no less than three shots on the last possession of the game, offering a fourth victory in a row to the best team in the NBA this season.
Reserve Payton Prichard led the Celtics with 21 points, Kristaps Porzingis had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jayson Tatum lacked efficiency (5-for-15), but was able to collect 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Pascal Siakam had 21 points and the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 126-112 on Friday, securing their ninth victory in 14 games.
Aaron Nesmith added 17 points for Indiana, sixth in the East.
Tyrese Haliburton had eight points and 11 assists, the last breaking Mark Jackson’s single-season team record of 713, set in 1997-98.
“Tyrese is a master at setting the stage for his teammates,” summed up Pacers coach Rick Carlisle.
TJ McConnell and Myles Turner each added 16 points.

Montrealer Luguentz Dort led OKC with 22 points, four more than Kenrich Williams.
The Thunder were without Ontarian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, third in the league in scoring, and also Jalen Williams, who is the team’s second in scoring.
SGA is injured in his right thigh and Williams is injured in his left ankle.
Josh Giddey had 14 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.
