Dominic Thiem Confirms Participation in French Open Qualifiers

The Lower Austrian announced a few weeks ago that he would definitely play in the qualifiers.

One thing is certain: if Dominic Thiem is fit, then he will also be in his eleventh French Open compete in Paris. However, it remains to be seen whether he will play in the main competition (from May 26th) or in the qualification before that.

In the entry list that has already been published six weeks before the second tennis major of the year, Thiem, as current number 105 in the ATP rankings, missed the main field by six places, so six players would have to cancel.

Thiem had already announced a few weeks ago that he would definitely play in the qualification. It cannot be ruled out that he will still apply for one of the wild cards. “You can’t apply for a wildcard yet, only from the 20th. But yes, it would be relatively logical if he’s not in the main draw,” said Thiem manager Moritz Thiem in response to an APA request on Thursday. He also assured that Thiem would definitely play in the qualification.

The chances of a wildcard are purely based on the success of the 30-year-old from Lower Austria, as he has reached four semi-finals (2016-2019) and two finals (2018,19) en suite at the largest clay court tournament in the world. In the last three years, however, Thiem was eliminated in the first round, last year in five sets against Pedro Cachin (ARG).

Before Paris, Thiem wants to compete in the Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid (from April 24th) and Rome (from May 8th). In both cases he has to qualify.

By the way, Austria’s number one, Sebastian Ofner, will also be competing in Madrid and Rome. In between, he currently has a Challenger planned in Aix-en-Provence (April 29th).
