Dominican Republic Shines at Pan American and Oceania Senior Individual Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro

The athletes Robert Florentino y Eiraima Silvestre They won gold medals, while Antonio Tornal, Ana Rosa and Moira Morillo won bronze medals in the Pan American and Oceania Senior Individual Judo Championships that concluded on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In total, the Dominican Republic ranked third with five medals, including two gold and three bronze, in the tournament that awarded points for qualification for the Olympic Games to be held from July 26 to August 11 of this year.

The Quisqueyan delegation, also made up of Jose Nova and Medickson of the Orbas well as coaches Wilkin Ogando and Wander Mateo, attended the championship with the support of the Ministry of Sports.

To win the gold, Robert Florentino won the four fights he fought in the -90 kilos category.

In the first fight he defeated the Australian Danny Vojnikovich; In the second he dispatched Louis Krieber Gagnon, from Canada, and in the semifinal he won against the Cuban Iván Felipe Silva Morales, and in the battle for gold he beat John Jayne, from the United States, who took the silver. The bronze was shared by Rafael Macedo, from Brazil, and Iván Silva Morales, from Cuba.

Eiraima Silvestre was crowned champion at -78 kilos by beating Brenda Olaya, from Colombia, in the final. In the first match, Silvestre defeated the Peruvian Camila Figueroa, and in the semifinal she defeated Moira De Villiers, from New Zealand, who won the silver medal.

Lianet Cardona, from Cuba, and Vanessa Chala, from Ecuador, took the two bronze medals.

Antonio Tornal won bronze by beating Jack Yonezukafrom the United States, in combat -73 kilos.
