Doping scandal, 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive before the Olympics: Wada did not verify. The Ard and New York Times investigation

One scandal of global scope, never explored in depth by those who should have done it – the Wadathe World Anti-Doping Agency – and now brought to light by “The China Files“, l’investigation conducted for two years by the investigative team of German public television ARD and from New York Times. A job that unmasks the doping of mass in Chinese: they are at the center of the scandal 23 of the best Chinese swimmerswhich six months before Olympics in Tokyoheld in 2021, tested positive for trimetazidine. The Wadawho was aware of the case, never carried out a real investigation, accepting the motivation of one at face value food contamination and thus allowing the athletes involved to compete at Olympic Games. The journalist investigation now causes the scandal to explode just over three months after Paris Olympics.

The reconstruction – According to the work of ARD e New York TimesIn the 2021 some of the most talented Chinese swimmers were found positive for trimetazidine during the competition Shijiazhuang. Among the names there are some illustrious ones: from the champion Zhang Yufei a Junxuan Yang to World Swimmer of the Year in 2023 Qin Haiyang. Thirteen of these 23 people went on to compete in the Olympics in the summer of 2021 and win medals in five competitions a Tokyo (three gold, two silver). More generally, they have always taken part in all competitions without problems. In fact, as underlined in the investigation, an investigation Chinese domestic acquitted them all of the doping charges because, according to the results, those who tested positive would have been victims of one contamination started from Kitchen of a hotel in Shijiazhuang. An involuntary fact, therefore, for which they did not deserve to be condemned.

The depression – Chinese research found traces of trimetazidine in the cooker hood kitchen aspirant, come on containers from the spices and on downloads. According to their investigations, the most probable administration scenario saw the substance leave from the containers with the spices and pass into the pots and in Pans and end up in for sure of the athletes: therefore the doping agent entered the bodies of the swimmers to them unknown. It is not clear who was allowed to use trimetazidine in the hotel kitchen, but the Chinese still asked Wada to do not prosecute the athletes. A request incredibly welcomed by the Agency which accepted without conducting around you an investigation independent. The swimmers, in the end, never received one disqualification and they were able to compete as if nothing had happened.

The reaction – In “The China Files” we read that, at the request of the ArdWada provided some clarifications in this regard stating that on the basis of the data received “there were no bases” to question the Chinese motivations of the contamination, which would have been characterized by “low concentrations” e “fluctuating values” found in anti-doping samples. The investigation of Ard e New York Times highlights all the crepe of the world anti-doping system in the hands of Wada. An Agency that has the enormous power to decide on the life and death of an athlete, at least from a sporting point of view, as demonstrated by the case of the walker Alex Schwazer.
