What is archery and what does it consist of?
“In the Olympic Games you shoot from 70 meters at a 122 millimeter target. There are several circles: yellow (10-9 points), red (8-7), blue (6-5), black (4-3) and target (2-1). 72 arrows would be shot to obtain a ranking. The one with the most points remains first and so on until the end. And the direct eliminations begin: the first against the last, the second against the penultimate… shoot in sets. If you win a set you add two points, if you tie one point and if you lose 0 points. The one who reaches six points first wins. In case of a tie at five, a shoot off or tie-breaking arrow would be thrown: one single arrow, the one closest to the center. If there are two tens, look to the center cross, with gauge, which is the closest, and thus the winner is determined.”
History
- Debut in the Olympic Games: Archery debuted at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, within the framework of the Universal Exhibition. After 1920 it was absent from the Olympic program for 52 years, reappearing in 1972, in Munich, with standardized forms.
- Leading country: South Korea tops the Olympic medal table with 42 medals, 27 gold (counted since 1972). Korean athletes currently hold all five active Olympic records. In 2021, South Korea’s budget for archery was about 14 million euros.
- Legends: The Belgian Hubert Van Innis, who won nine metals between 1900 and 1920 (six gold and three silver).
- Current leaders: The Korean An San, who won three gold medals in Tokyo 2020, has been ousted in the world ranking by her compatriot, the young Lim Si-hyeon. In men, the Brazilian Marcus D’Almeida occupies first place, who had a spectacular 2023.

Did you know…?
At the 92 Barcelona Olympic Games, a Spanish archer was in charge of lighting the Cauldron in a spectacular way, launching a flaming arrow. It was Antonio Rebollo, Paralympic medalist (silver in 1984 and bronze in 1988), who starred in a moment in the history of Spanish sport.
Expectations
Miguel Alvariño: “If we focus well, I think we can get three medals in Paris 2024, or at least the diploma. It can be achieved because we have the level, we have already shown it in recent years in both the men’s team and the individual and the mixed one. Getting into the diploma and from there on up would be a good goal, it is what would mark me without a doubt.”
Why should you watch this sport on Eurosport?
“You should see it because Spain is in the best moment in its history, from my point of view. We have had two very good Olympic cycles, the shame is that in Tokyo the team place was not achieved. If you want to see the highest level of sport and something that is exciting, and to see a Spaniard try to be with the best, choose archery because you will probably be surprised.
